After experiencing rush hour at Sips in downtown Shawnee, I caught my breath with a cup of coffee and a quiet afternoon chat with the owner, Brad Carter. I was excited to learn how he took a simple idea for a business, zapped energy into a sleepy downtown, and created fans nearly as passionate about his vision as he is.
A lot of people knew about Sips before there was a Sips. Brad had a Facebook page started called “Project 114” that documented the restoration of downtown, highlighting the progress of Sips opening.
Hundreds of Shawnee people visited that page, showing interest and getting invested in the notion of a Main St. revival. By the time Sip’s opened its doors or even had its’ own Facebook page it already had fans. And not just any fans, but passionate, convicted devotees, excited about the broader vision of what a coffee shop downtown would mean for the whole community.
